What you need to do:

  • Find out how to ready for a tropical cyclone at the Get Ready Queensland website (Get Prepared) and make an emergency kit.
  • Find the strongest and safest room in the building you are in. This will be away from big windows. It could be a bathroom, walk-in wardrobe, or hallway. Shelter here when the tropical cyclone comes.
  • Cover windows with plywood, a mattress or heavy blanket. Shelter under a mattress if the roof comes off.
  • Put your emergency kit in your safe room.
  • Do not use gas or generators inside. Fumes can be deadly.
  • Fill your car with fuel or charge it, and park it undercover. Do not park under a tree.
  • Store or tie down outside items, like caravans, boats, trailers, outdoor furniture, gas bottles, toys and play equipment.
  • Move outdoor furniture inside or sink it in your pool so it doesn’t fly around in strong winds.
  • Boil and conserve water for drinking, cooking, and bathing, in case water supplies are impacted.
  • Be ready to turn off power, solar, water and gas to your house if you can and if it is safe.
  • Check your family, friends and neighbours know what to do. Help them if you can.

It's the little things that can make all the difference.

* ABC Radio is the official emergency communication channel

* If you're experiencing prolonged high winds and it suddenly becomes still, don't go outside as you could be under the eye of the storm whereby there is quietness until the wind changes direction and picks up speed again.

*Fill some small water bottles and freeze them now in case the power goes out as you will need to keep food cold for as long as possible.

* Fill some water containers with drinking water and fill your baths or sinks with water just in case.

* Start to use the food in your freezer now so that if power goes out for a day or several days, you will not be losing so much food.

*Move all hanging plants out of the wind. Also consider moving potted plants, although they may not become flying objects in high winds, they may become shredded.

* Remove all objects that have the potential to become missiles in high winds, especially trampolines, plastic chairs and anything that could easily be picked up by the wind, including sheets of iron etc.

You'll not only be protecting your own place but that of your neighbours if something from your yard becomes airborne. The last thing you want is for something to come flying through your windows.

*If you have a chainsaw, fill it with fuel and have it ready to go in case you need to remove fallen trees or branches from your driveway, road or property.

* Identify the safest place in your house to take shelter away from windows in case of windows being blown, objects flying in through your windows or your roof lying off in an extreme situation which hopefully wont be the case.

* Have some gardening gloves handy in case you need to remove broken glass or other sharp objects inside the home.

* Have a pair of solid shoes beside your bed in case you have to get up in the middle of the night to attend to broken windows or glass etc.

* The wind pressure can build up immensely inside of a house and while hopefully the winds here won't be as strong as up north, it is a common practice up north to open a window on the opposite side of the house to where the wind is blowing to release the pressure. Once the eye of the storm passes, and the wind changes direction you would need to close that window and open a window on the opposite side of the house. You would need to monitor the wind direction to know where to open your windows and it usually is easy to know which way the wind is coming at you as leaves will be stuck all over your windows.

* Stay well away from windows and glass doors during high winds.

* Although in SE Qld we have lots of big storms with strong winds, the difference with a cyclone is that you will experience prolonged winds with a lot of noise and howling which can be frightening for children and adults too.

* Ensure you conserve your phone battery and only make calls that are really necessary. You may not be able to re charge if the power is out for several days. Ensure your phone remains fully charged prior to the storms arrival.

* Bring your pets inside as they too will most likely be scared.

* Gather all of your important documents and keep them handy and ensure they're wrapped in a waterproof satchel/container

* Of course it goes without saying that you should ensure that your vehicle has a full tank of fuel, you have cash on hand in case of power outages, phones fully charged prior to the storms, extra non perishable foods, batteries for torches and pet food.

* Ensure you have enough prescription drugs on hand and an adequate first aid kit.

* Good old gaffer tape could come in handy too and from my experience in Cairns, tape is really hard to get off windows so I would only use that if I was directly in the path of high velocity winds. Thats a personal choice of course and you do what you feel is best for you.

If I think of anything else I'll add to this list or if my dear friend advises of any other tips. If you have any tips yourself please add them in the comments here.

Some of these tips may appear to be a bit over the top, but it pays to be prepared and if the storm passes you by, be grateful for your safety and happy that you've learned something about cyclone preparedness.

As they do say in the far north, prepare for the worst and hope for the best.

The sun is out here, a breeze is blowing, the birds are chirping and it's easy to be complacent under such conditions but being prepared now is paramount as it'll be too late once the weather dramatically changes.

Stay safe everyone

  •  Importance of AIRFLOW
    • Keep ALL Windows/Doors SHUT for WIND APPROACHING THAT SIDE OF THE HOUSE (Open a Window on the OPPOSITE (Non Affected Side) briefly if you need to get some air or want to circulate some air, however be careful & bare in mind WIND that enters a home through open windows creates strong upward pressure on the home's roof & that's how roof's pop off.
    •  in so the AIR PRESSUIRE in the house doesn't cause glass to break prematurely

  • To TAPE or NOT to Tape (sliding doors/windows)
    • Taping sliding doors and windows isn't to STOP them from breaking, experts stopped recommending taping for increased resilience years ago.. Taping is moreso for making clean up easier.... Taped glass means there is less of it flying about and flying towards you

  • Silicone Sliding Doors to prevent Water Ingress in in TIDAL / LOW LYING AREA
    • If you are in a tidal area and you are watching the water creep up towards your back door / sliding doors etc then you can silicone the top inside facing rail to the sliding door (DONT SILICONE THE INSIDE RAILS/RUNNERS)
    • Think the outside seams of a fishtank - that's what you are siliconing
    • Note - obviously if the water rises up the this then it could get to a point whereby you will have needed to create a FLOOD CHANNEL from one side of the house to the other so the water can get through if a seal or glass panel breaks from impact from an object.
